2020 GUTS ???
May 28, 2020, 6:46 am

Hello skiers, parents, and ski friends!

I hope that everyone is doing the best they can, with staying safe and healthy.

The Covid 19 situation has certainly moved our world, into never seen before, extreme practices.

My heart goes out to all student athletes and our senior skiers who missed out on their last hurrah in so many spring events.

Dial into your physical needs, and pay attention to your mental health too.

Life is messed up, but know that all of you will come out of this stronger, smarter & kinder.

Let's keep praying, and hope for a positive outcome for everyone for the summer & fall seasons.

Coach CJ

 ** GUTS 2020 **

Currently, GUTS is in a holding pattern.

The MSHSL is meeting today.  The latest news is that the summer coaching waiver has been pushed out to June 15th, but there aren't any other guidelines, cooridinating with that.

The Covid 19 clarity - with High School sports - has been sparse so far. (youth sports are a seperate entity)

Attached is a link to the National Federation of High School Sport Association and their guidelines as of May 15 2020.

I'll update GUTS info as I learn more.

Week # 14!

The final week of team togetherness is upon us.

From Nov. 11 to now, everything we’ve learned, trained & raced for is quickly becoming a memory of a fantastic ski season. Sooo many awesome happenings, (both on & off the ski trails) is why we have such a great ski team and it’s why we coach.  “Serious Fun” is usually our game plan, and it has been witnessed 100 times over with Every. Team. Member.

Thank you to our skiers and their support crews (Moms/ Dads/Grandparents) for everything you do. When we ask, you deliver.  It doesn’t get any better than that!

CONGRATS to all of our Section Teams & JH/JV Championship skiers!  We had a full week of racing and everyone put their heart into “Skiing Their Best Race”.

The girl’s team missed a State berth by a tie breaker to Ely, but we still topped it off with sending 3 individual girls to the State Meet.  Lydia, Anna & Bella placed 4th, 9th & 10th and will be representing ME / VA / EG / MIB on Thursday at Giant’s Ridge.  CONGRATS to them and all of  our lady skiers this super accomplishment and FAST SKIS to the triple threat trio as they race in the finale’ of the 2019/20 high school season.

To top all that excitement was an incredible day of speedy skiing for our younger & new skier teams at the JV/JH Championships on Saturday.  Every age class consisted of someone from our team. And not just one skier. Each award line, held 1-3 skiers in the top ten.  WOW! This is certainly a testament to their training, and to their coaches that get them across the finish line in that fashion.  Congrats to all who raced and all out appreciation, to Coach Austin & Parker for all they do. Find your favorite JV/JH ski racer results here:http://www.stevestiming.org/jv_jh_champs_2_8_20.pdf

These Junior skiers are officially done for the high school racing season, but we encourage them to come out to ski with their pals on Monday & Tuesday this week, as official practice for our State & Charlie Bank Relay skiers are still practicing on these days too.   The bus transportation from VA & ME is still a go on Monday & Tuesday, then it’s done.

More appreciation and THANKS to all the skiers who became T shirt sales people at the Section meet, along with all of the parents who cooked, baked, served, provided & waxed for and with us, as our teams prepared last week for our big shows.  The team ship cruises at its best, with all of you, at the helm.  Thank you again.

So what does this final week hold for all of us??  Some more practicing, racing, cheering, recognizing and more… Check out our last weekly schedule.

Monday, Feb 10th / Tuesday Feb 11th:  practice for State & CB Relay skiers. Others come ski on their own

if they want.

Wednesday Feb 12th: Pep Fest / Send Off for the entire team at Mesabi East, 8:30 am. Wear your Section shirts, or team jacket. L, B & A bring your Section medals. Everyone will be recognized, line up outside the Memorial gym at 8:20. Brunch at the Hive Coffee & Bakehouse after. Bring money. Following this, we will go to Giant’s Ridge to wax and prep for the Charlie Banks Relays. See race list page for more info.

Thursday, Feb 13th:  State Meet at Giant’s Ridge. Team camp is in the 3rd floor conference room in the Lodge. Look for our team tent & flag outside. Skiers to arrive at GR by 8 am.  All V/JV skiers will be excused from school on this day. All others need to contact their school for an excused absence to attend the meet.

Friday, Feb. 14th:  No more practice – we are officially done for the high school season.  But, stay dialed in as many skiers get together to ski & race post season with some fun citizen races!

Saturday, Feb 15th:  The Book Across the Bay (BAB). Carpooling from Mesabi East, leaving at 11 am.  This event begins at 6 pm in Ashland. After the race we’ll get pizza. Bring: ski equipment, swim suit, etc. along with money for the extras: pizza, lunches, snacks & the ski shop stop. We’ll stop to ski at the After Hour Trail system in Brule on the way back on Sunday, allow $4 for the trail fee here too.  Arrive in Aurora, around 5-6 pm, or earlier.

WHAT ELSE???

  • Equipment & Uniform Return – a date / time in within the 2nd week of March will be set up to get this done.  IF your skier chooses to return things earlier, it must be done on Monday Feb 10th or Tuesday Feb 11th at practice time, and everything must be checked in with Coach Johnson.  Please do not return anything to your school’s AD.

Week # 12!

This team is working hard! Everyone from the Varsity to the Newbie teams are showing up at practice and “making it count”. We’ve talked about “amazing accomplishments” and “putting in the extra’s” to increase and maintain our ski racing persona’s. Sometimes there’s an oops or a crash during a ski meet, but learning from our mistakes gives all of us, that additional tool in our training & racing ski box.

Ski Olympian Jessie Diggins’ blogs should be on all of our skier bookmarks, as this Minnesota girl is the queen of all the ups, downs and awesome skinny ski stories that our team can learn from.

THANKS to our ski volunteers at the last couple of Sunday’s MYSL outings!

Ella, Hannah, Anna, Lydia, Bella, Liz, Kate, Wren, Slyvie, Connor, Carter, Tylen, Isaiah & Nick. You skiers are awesome role models for those little skiers!

We made the most of Mother Nature’s snowball last week with good practices on Friday and MLK day. THANKS to all who roll with our schedule changes, while staying flexible and adaptable - on what us coaches need to accomplish - when the cold temps and snowstorms mess up our racing calendar.

The countdown at practice has begun: 16 days till the Section race and 18 days left until the JV / JH Championships. Our teams are physically dialing things up to be race ready on the course, and the daily sermon is all about staying mentally sharp and top of the line healthy. Recovery, Rest, Reset.
