_____________________________________________________________________________________

The forecast is going to be balmy this week... so much, that we are going to dig our skate skis out and remember how to use them!

Saturday's Ely Classic (at Snowflake) was a great way to kick off our season! Most of the team raced, (even our newbies) and showed us coaches and the competition that they know how to ski.  Congrats to the Varsity boys & girls for rockin' that first place spot on the podium for team standings! Our JV skiers proved their times in their 5k races also, and our Jr. High / first year skiers are just plain fun to watch!

Love the smiles everyone -   maybe that can be the ME / VA / E-G ski team's signature ski accessory!  Keep it up- and keep working hard at practice!

A full week is ahead of us- a full week of SKIING !!  Snow is also forecasted- and we need the real stuff for the trails- keep those snow dances going!

Stadium Skiing:  is what we are looking at for our upcoming practice days, and you'll need to bring both skate & classic equipment to practice.  Most of you have your skis / poles stored in the shed, but your boots will be taken home on a daily basis.  Ski bags are required at this point to keep your equipment contained, let a coach know if you need one, we have some exra's laying around.

Ski Passes:  need to be purchased this week.  If you signed up for the group pass sale, bring your check in asap, made out to the ME / VA / E-G Nordic Boosters.  Our treasurer will then write one check to Giant's Ridge.  This saves everyone from paying sales tax.  Family passes can also be combined on our team group pass sale.  Check out the Giant's Ridge website for more pass info.  http://www.giantsridge.com/.

2nd Annual Maplelag Ski Trip:  All team members our welcome on this trip- even our first year skiers!  This ski camp is scheduled for Sat. Dec. 28 - Mon. Dec. 30.  Three days and two nights.  Arrive back in the Virginia area late afternoon on Monday.  Our booster club will pay for one day/ night, so the total cost of the trip, for each skier will be $ 70.00.  (not $65 as stated earlier)  This fee includes the trail pass, all meals at the resort, and a ton of fun.  Parents are encouraged and welcome to join us - and we may need adult drivers.  (call or email me if interested)  The sign up list is on the bulletin board, sign up by DEC. 16th.  Check back for more team info on this outing as more details emerge.  The Maplelag website is: http://www.maplelag.com/.

Dec. 7th Ski Meet:Our team will not be attending this race. Looks iffy at this point, we'll keep our fingers crossed for promising weather this week!

Week # 3
Nov 24, 2013, 10:04 pm

It's a short week of practice - just Monday & Tuesday.  Dryland training continues, but the blaze orange can be put away! A team wax clinic is also on this week's practice agenda.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, keep your fitness levels in check with some daily runs & core workouts. Your body & mind will thank you for it!

Once we return, we should be skiing!  Either on man-made snow in the stadium, or the real deal on the trails.  Let's vote for the latter!

Xmas ski trip to Maplelag Resort is now posted. The dates are Dec 28- 30.  Leave Sat morning, stay 2 nights, & return home on Monday afternoon.  The cost will be around $ 65.00 for the trip for skiers.  Parents- you are welcome to join us! More info to come. Sign up on the bulletin board.

On Monday, Dec 2, bring your ski boots & skis, if they aren't at the Ridge already.

WELCOME to all our new skiers... & a big WELCOME back to our current team members!

 Laughing

At Sunday night's meeting, we covered a lot of ground - of the in's & out's of our ski team and ski season.  The only thing that is important right now, is that YOU come to practice with the same smiles, attitudes, enthusiasm and dedication that I saw last year! For all of you new folks- that is all you need to do also.  Us coaches (& mother nature) will take care of the rest!

Practice will start on Tuesday, Nov. 12th.  (No school for Mesabi East on Mon. 11/11) We will meet everyday at Giant's Ridge at 4pm.  Practice will run until 5:30 for now. Transportation for VA / E-G skiers is provided from the VA school.  E-G skiers - ride the bus to the Gilbert Jr. High, then the VA bus will pick you up and head to GR. After practice, the same for the return trip. The Mesabi East skiers will ride bus #5 out to GR, and parents will pick them up at GR on compeletion of practice.

The next two weeks (hopefully less than that!) will be dedicated to dry-land training which will consist of trail running, plyometrics, core sessions, InSanITy work-outs, etc.

Please bring: clearance slip, running shoes, hat, gloves, tights, water bottle, etc.  If you have any favorite BLAZE ORANGE pieces, bring that also. (it is deer hunting season) We will provide a good number of orange vests also.

Some other notes:

-   Ski Equipment:  will be handed out in these next two weeks to those that need it.  Try to get a "Nordic" ski bag soon. (at least 210 cm in length, and a double bag is best). We have extra's that you can borrow short term also.

-   Ski Passes: will be bought as a group, so sign up on the list at practice. We'll need these once we are on snow.

-   Team Handbook: remember  to go over the this  (on this site) with your skier, and print out the last page.  Turn it in to a coach.

-   Team Jackets: sizes will be available to try on at practice, more info to come.

Good Luck to all our skier  / swimmers this week at sections!!

Looking forward to a super snowy & fun season!

See you on Tuesday!

The snowflakes are falling!  Let's hope that is a sign for things to come for our ski season!  Early SNOW & lots of it!! Smile

A couple of items that the team needs to take in about our upcoming season...

- NEW SKIER RECRUITMENT:  Informational team flyers / sign-up forms are posted at your schools.  Brochures will be mailed out to you, pass them along to your friends & sport teammates.   If you know of someone who is looking for something to do this winter, tell them about your experiences on the ski team and how much fun we have!  Give them info, have them check out this website, find us on FACEBOOK, and have them come to our pre-season meeting.

YOU are the best recruiting tool- our team has!!!

- PRE-SEASON MEETING Sunday, Nov. 3rd, at 6pm. Giant's Ridge in the training center / sports dorm.  (this has been changed from the previous date of Oct. 27) Please make every effort to attend this meeting.  We will be discussing our team's policies, practices, meets, equipment, ski trips, etc.  We also need to know who is joining the 2013/24 team, so we can verify the team member statistics.   This information is very important when rounding out our coaching staff.

- WEST YELLOWSTONE SKI TRIP: So far, there are  8+ skiers from our team that will be heading west on Nov. 22 for this great ski camp.  Early ski kilometers are at the top of the list, (and a whole lot-of fun to go along with it).  Still thinking about it?  There is still time to send in your registration! (but you need to do it ASAP) I'd love to see more skiers attending!  Remember there is a    $ 100 scholarship for first time WY participants.  (reimbursement checks will be available at our pre-season meeting)  All the WY info is posted on this website, under "News".  And the forms can be found on a previous email... Either way, if you have any questions / concerns about WY, let me know.

- $$$ FALL MAGAZINE DRIVE: With many thanks to all of you who helped gather & pre-pare for our fall magazine fundraiser!  Gracious kudo's to Tom Krog & family for this wonderful bi-annual opportunity, along with our booster club president- Brenda M, for getting the details together.  More thanks to those that emptied bags & boxes in Virginia on Friday, Sept. 27: Ian, Spencer and Jenna, Isaac,  Lisa,  Sandy , Karen , Reed, and to Sam & the Krog's for helping load the trailer at the Johnson's.  Our grand total was 8160 pounds of glossy paper!   Yeah for the ski team!!

- USED SKI EQUIPMENT:  outgrown your stuff?  Let me know what you have and I'll post it on this site- some type of selling board / forum.  What I need to know: sizes & brands of  skis, bindings, (NNN or SNS type),  boots & poles, along with your contact information & price.  Our team will also be providing equipment for the season to those that need it.  First year skiers- no charge.  Second year & up skiers may rent skate & classic equipment for $ 25.00 for the 2013/14 ski year.

- GOOD LUCK:  to all ME / VA / E-G Cross Country Runners at the Section 7A meet this week.   Thursday is YOUR day!  Make it your BEST race of the CC season!

We are on our way to the new ski season!  If you have any suggestions, comments, or questions, please let me know!

See you soon!
