The Brainerd Team hosted a “Continuous Pursuit” today at Mt. Itasca.

Fun! Challenging! Tiring! Better than the Real Pursuit! Those were the comments that were heard- floating around the race course today - .

The event format provided 10.8k of non-stop skiing for our Varsity skiers. Each skier skied 2 laps of classical, then came into a transition area to switch up their skis (& sometimes poles) to head out for 2 more laps of skating.

Our Varsity teams fared well within the 15 teams! The boys took home 3rd place (just 6 points out of 2nd place & 12 pts. from 1st) while our ladies managed a nice 6th place finish. The JV & JH skiers also rocked on the podiums, as they had many finishes in the top 20. These races were full- 75 skiers in the boys JH, and 110 in the girls JH. Full results are posted at www.skinnyski.com. Go to the "racing" page, then click on "high school" then, click results page.  Pursuit / JV / JH photos also posted in the photo gallery- compliments of Mr. Ron Kutsi- a Grand Rapids / ME / VA /E-G ski fan!

Our progress is heading in the right direction as our skiers are getting stronger and faster.  It was a fun way to end our holiday of (Christmas) break, and everyone contributed a solid week of practices and meets. Great job skiers and keep up the good work! The more you ski – the faster you will be! Get out and put some k’s on- over the New Year’s weekend!!

Captain’s Awards for this meet went to:

-          Transitions 101- to our three managers- Wolfie, Julia & Sarah for their outstanding performances as they quickly learned all about “transitions between races”. Skis off, skis on, bindings shut, poles ready, and.... go!

-          Best ski race for a “First Varsity” race- Stephanie. Way to conquer your first Varsity race- a continuous pursuit!

-          Fastest Transition by a ME/VA/E-G skier- Simon. He nailed this event!

Dec 27, 2011, 8:19 pm

Great skiing at the Deer River Invite.  Our skiers certainly know where all the turns, trees, and hills are now!  Most of our skiers were on the "first page" of results- Jack's favorite line for where a skier finished- and you always want to be on that first page.... :)   Full results will be posted on www.skinnyski.com.  Check them out- and all the other fun and interesting news on this ski site!  New race pics are also posted in the photo gallery.

THANKS for our pics- Jake, Ron & Gary!!

With the couple of inches of snow that we received over last weekend, we are able to ski on the trails at the Ridge.  So- the ABR trip is cancelled. We will ski at Giant's Ridge on Thursday, and our team was also invited to join the Section 8 folks for a continuous pursuit race on Friday, Dec. 30th, at.....  MT. Mesabi East Invite Info from Race Manager- Deb Maki.

Dear Parents & Skiers:

The ME Invite is right around the corner.   There will be a race – even if there is lack of snow.  John Filander has an alternate plan for his race course if we don’t get 4-6” before the 7th of January.

Each family is required to have a someone work the spaghetti feed  (which Norma Jean Jofs is coordinating - 229-3663) and there should be at least one parent to work the actual meet.    You can e-mail me back or call 865-8072 to confirm that a parent or other family member can work this race.   All volunteers should be to the Timing Bldg. in the Stadium at Giants Ridge by 9:00 am.   The race is on Saturday, January 7th and starts at 10:00 am.  Here are some of the jobs available:  Tech/Controllers – actually skiing out on the course to check technique, Starters, Asst. Starters, Outside Crowd Control – working out on the course, Timing – outside and inside.    Most of the jobs will be outside and you have to dress warmly.  I do not believe we have to worry about timing chips this year – the bibs are supposed to have built in chips.

I will be waiting to hear from you.

Thank you and Happy New Year to all!

Sincerely,

Deb Maki - Volunteer

Dec 20, 2011, 10:38 pm

The Ely classic meet was well -attended by many teams.  Everyone wants in on the action since we are all looking for the white stuff!  The skiers of ME/ VA/ E-G proved that they are in the mix with the fast and confident skiing they provided today.  Great job skiers! Check out the results at www.boreal.org/~durfee .  Pics of the meet are also online.

This meet the CAPTAIN's AWARDS went to: Anna Johnson- most falls in a race... Reed Melicher - Best positive attitude after his first classice race...  and Nate Giese- great skate technique performed (ah hem) in a classic race.

The weather forcast for the next week, doesn't look very promising... so, the Deer River Invite scheduled for the 27th, will be held (again) at Mt. Itasca.

Maybe we can ski the course backwards this time? Surprised How about without poles for a change-up?   Stay - tuned for more info on this one.

The Ely ski meet scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 18th, has been cancelled due to lack of snow.  At this point, it looks like a very good possibility, that this meet will be rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 20th, at Mt. Itasca.  More details to come.

Let it SNOW!

Dec 11, 2011, 12:43 pm

Grand Rapids Invite recap:  Overall our team did well, we had a few individuals who made the top 10 in their races, and our team scores were in the middle of the pack.  As this was our first meet, the coaches were able to get many views on how our skiers are skiing. We will keep focusing on technique in order to ski faster, while still concentrating on increasing our endurance load.  As Jack would often say " The birch trees have many sets of eyes in the woods".  Along with that, Mariah had a video camera on hand...  You will find complete results on Steve's Timing website:  www.boreal.org.  Please add this site to your "Favorites", as this is where all of ski meet results are posted.

New race photos have been added - check them out!

Looking ahead, we will not be skiing at Tuesday's Dec. 13th meet in Duluth. It is now a 6pm race on the alpine hill.  We will instead look ahead to the Ely Classic race on Sat. 12/18.

CHRISTMAS PARTY:  Our Christmas ski practice party will be held on Thursday, Dec. 22.  We have moved the date from Wed. 12/21, since VA school is still in session.  I need to know who is staying overnite (in the sports dorms)  on Thurs. 12/22. Please sign up on the bulletin board asap.

TEAM HATS- I have some left from last season's order.  Pick up & pay at

 practice-$ 14.00 each.

Team Jackets- were ordered. If you have any questions - call Norma Jean Jofs.

Picture Day- Thursday, Dec. 15. Forms went home with the skiers this week.  Skiers need to bring their "FLAME" and their black / grey team jacket (if they have one).

Ski Funnies  Smile from JohnnyKlister.com

Stand and Destroy

Handler: Listen up people, you need to spread out and occupy every blind corner. I want no one to ski around a stretch of trail without fearing a plucky bunch of Minnesotans standing headlong on the trail.

Small concerned high school athlete: But shouldn’t we continue skiing as much as possible?

Handler: WE DIDN’T DRIVE 18 HOURS TO SKI HERE, PEOPLE. IF WE WANTED TO SKI, WE WOULD HAVE GONE TO BEMIDJI. (Collects self) Listen, those corners aren’t going to occupy themselves.

Outspoken older high school athlete: But, boss, I’m really hoping to get as much skiing in as possible to be ready for the season.

Handler: There are months until the state meet. You need to follow a strict plan of shuffle, obstruct and taper. Are we clear???

Outspoken older high school athlete: But the first JOQ is mere weeks away? And…

Handler: LISTEN! YOU GET OUT THERE AND OBSTRUCT. NO ONE CARES ABOUT P’s and Q’s or WHATEVER. (Adopts somber tone.) Now listen, some of you aren’t coming back alive. But that’s why there are 700,000 of you. Without you, master skiers and their reign of terror over the Dead Dog and Deja View landscape will last forever. Now live the dream.

Students: (With Braveheart-esque fury- skiing forth:) AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGG

New Team Website !!
Nov 29, 2011, 12:57 pm

Skiers, families & ski fans will now be able to find everything they need on the new ME / VA / E-G Nordic Website.  Practice and meet schedules are listed, but can change often.  Please view the team handbook for all of the team's policies and expectations.  It has been updated from last year with a couple of noticable changes to the lettering and cell phone policies.  The Photo Gallery will compensate for all the individual emailing I have done in the past.  Have photo's to share?  Email them to me and I will post them on the website. The website will keep evolving and improving- let me know if you have suggestions and or ideas! I hope the website will be a beneficial and efficient tool for all of us!

On another note, a big welcome to our new coaches!  Tony Norland and Mariah Peterson are our 2011/12 volunteer coaches and we are thrilled to have them on board.

Tony is an art teacher at Virginia Public Schools, and is originally from Marshall. Tony & Jenna K. were co-coaches for thr VA cross country team this fall. Tony is a graduate of UMD, and is enjoying the northland. You'll find him on the Ridge trails most evenings..

Mariah is originally from Houghton, MI and is a recent graduate of SCSU where she was a member of the nordic ski team.  Mariah is currently working in the Keewatin - Nashwauk schools as a permanent substitue teacher for the rest of the school year.  She and her husband Josh live in Virginia.

We are lucky to have a coaching staff of 5!

(PS- I am still trying to get the Golden Bear Logo up on the banner...)
