It was a busy final week for the ski team!

Here is a re-cap of what happened!!

THURS. 2/16 : The STATE meet was exciting! CONGRATS !! to Sam J. for his wonderful performance- a 38th place finish-a huge step forward from last year’s 85th spot! And a last-call to the speller / skier on our team, who placed 4th at the Bee- GREAT JOB- EMMA! Emma will move on to the next level, on March 1st. A fine day (all-around)skiers!

Along with the STATE Meet event- I want to say “Thanks” to all the fan support at Giant’s Ridge at the STATE Meet too. It was fun to see so many fellow team members, students, parents, and teachers take part in what us skiers enjoy..!

WED. 2/15: We kicked things off with a STATE send -off / Pep Fest at Mesabi East to honor Sam & Emma. It was a fantastic showing and (hugely proud) moment for this coach to present our 3 school team to the students and staff at Mesabi East. Our skiers looked awesome in their team jackets, as they lined up across the gym! Posters were made by the pep club, each school song was played, and all of our skiers were introduced. Sam & Emma then had their own spot-light! Another great job skiers! THANK YOU for YOUR support!!

Then the CHARLIE BANK’s RELAYS started at 1pm at Giant’s Ridge, with our two teams of 4: one for the guys, and one for the gals. We were about half-way on the result list, for 40 teams. Drew, Bennett, Simon & Austin placed at 21, while the gals – Anna, Emma H, Stephanie & Juliana took 22. These relays are always a fun lead up to the STATE meet! Check out the skier’s t-shirts from this event…. “Got Snow?” is printed on the back- and I believe that was the theme to our ski season too!

TUES. 2/14: This day was our final ski season practice- where we brought back the annual “HOT DOG / SMORE’ ROAST “ at Trapper Creek Cabin- the shelter between the Biwabik Spur & Oslo Trails. One of the big perks of the season- to ride the chairlift up – was welcomed by everyone. BUT, we still have to ski quite a ways to the shelter, and then back down to the chalet! A warm fire & roasting sticks awaited our team, thanks to Kim Norman & Jack Greenlee. After a filling snack of smores & dogs, the team got down to business with a mean game of Red Rover. (we start & end the season with this name- calling event) Coach Mariah & her husband Josh, were popular - going back & forth between the gals & guys teams. It was a terrific ending to our daily practice schedule, and thanks to all who made the adventure to the cabin. (Only 268 more days (as of 2/18) till next ski season!?!)

MON. 2/13: Super fast performances by our young and upcoming skiers at the JH / JV Championships on Monday, Feb. 13th! Some of our skiers lost out to first place finishes by one-tenth of a second… The course at Spirit Mtn. was again very challenging and we hope not to visit this venue next year!

RESULTS & PICS & VIDEOS: from this past week at www.boreal.org/~durfee, and www.skinnyski.com, and I have updated the photo gallery. Check out your FAVORITE SKI TEAM MEMBERS!

The section meet brought us many great results and end-of-the-season, personal bests!

Congratulations to "Sam Johnson" and "Emma Greenlee" for their acquired State Berths! Placing second and fifteenth, these two skiers will race in the State Meet on Thursday at Giant’s Ridge, against the best of the best throughout Minnesota.  Good Luck!!   Congratulations also to our boys & girls teams, who placed 3rd and 4th respectively- out of 11 schools- you know how to ski fast too! All of the dedicated hours put forth from November 15th, has paid off in several meaningful ways, that I believe, everyone on our team can relate to.  It was an exciting day of racing! Get all the details at www.skinnyski.com – under the Section 7 headline. Lots of great pics of our skiers too! (thanks Ron!)

On Monday, the Jr. High & Jr. Varsity will show their side of skiing with the Championships at Spirit Mtn. in Duluth. The Jr. High will compete against their own grade levels, while the JV skiers are comprised 11th & 12th level skiers. Upcoming for the SKI TEAM - week of Feb 6-10, & "THE BOOK"
Feb 5, 2012, 11:55 pm

What a great day for our young men & women at the Cook County Invite on Friday!   The guys brought home a 3rd place trophy, while the gals took 5th overall. This race was the final “tune-up” before the Section race, for our Varsity skiers to see where they stand with their competitors – on an individual and team basis.  Many of our skiers participated in their first ever pursuit race, which consisted of a different course on the Pincushion Trails for both the skate (5.3k) & classic (5.6k) races.   Our teams were determined to (out ski) some other schools, and they did. They also received many compliments on their “new” uniforms.   Our team looked good! A video re-cap of the race can be found at www.wtip.org, while results are online at www.boreal.org/~durfee.

NICE PERFORMANCES  SKIERS!!!

New Uniform Care: Wash in cold water. Do not wash with team warm-up pants. The velcro can attach to the lycra fabric easily and cause pilling. Do not dry in the dryer. HANG DRY. These 2 piece suits are very expensive. Let’s get many many years out of them!

As we look to our BIG DAY … the Section 7 MEET.

-          Monday, Feb. 6 – Classic. Work on Section Course. Time Trials for those not attending Friday’s race. Section teams to be determined.

-          Tuesday, Feb. 7- Classic.

-          Wed. Feb. 8- Wax & Team dinner.

-          Thursday. Feb 9- Section Meet . First race is at 10:00 am. Skiers need to be at GR at 8:00 am.

Next week will also be very busy as we have the :

Jr High & JV Championships on Monday, 2/13; (place yet to be determined)

the Charlie Bank’s Relay’s – two (2 x 4) relay teams, on Wed. 2/15;

and the STATE MEET on Thurs. 2/16.

That’s it- for the season!

With that in mind, some ski fun is in the works….

There has been lots of interest from skiers to attend the “Book Across the Bay” event again this year in Ashland, WI.   The date is Sat. Feb. 18, at 6pm. This is a fun family tour and race of many different themes. Walk, run, snowshoe or ski a 10k (no hills!) at dusk across the Chequamegon Bay , starting at Ashland and finishing across the frozen pond- at Washburn.   Thousands of luminaries light the course with a great ending of the biggest bonfire you’ll ever see.   We are again staying at the Americinn in Ashland, with compliments of Jody Guy-Krulc’s nephew (Todd- general manager) that offered our team a great rate of 69.99 per room.

If you’re interested in going, give the Americinn a call & ask for Todd and check out the info about the Book Across the Bay can be found at www.batb.org.   Come join us and other ME/VA/E-G skiers for a great evening of skiing and fun!

The Yesterday's, Time Trials, Friday's Meet.
Jan 28, 2012, 11:18 am

was great to see many of our skiers out this weekend skiing! Good job at "puttin' in the extras!"  I know the Giant's Ridge Youth Ski League folks are also happy to see our team members on this past month of Sunday's, and the little skiers- look up to our big skiers! You guys make me proud of the time you are giving back to this organization, along with the Jr. Nordic Club.  I believe many of you received your first ski lessons on those Friday nights, many, many years ago!  Old memories of the younger ski years were also viewed last night after practice on the 2008 ski team video.  The common question was- "Is that really me?"   Now many of you are seniors, juniors & sophomores.  WOW!!

Getting back to the present, yesterday's TIME TRIAL was fun to observe.  The Silver 5K course wasn't as tough as many thought, and that was a WONDERFUL thing to hear!  Us coaches are looking forward to seeing what will happen at Sections next week.  The next time trial is Monday, for the classic portion of the pursuit- up the Cedar.

Noticeable also, was our -1st year skiers- they have turned the corner, and they are skiing very well!  These skiers will show what they have at the Jr. High Championships on Feb. 13.  Keep rockin' and you'll be on the podium!!

There is lots' of real snow at the Pincushion Trails in Grand Marias and it will be great to ski somewhere (new) on Friday.  Overlooking the big lake is always a bonus. It is an early morning, as the bus pulls out of Mesabi East at 6:30 am. VA & E-G skiers come to ME on this day to board the bus. We should be back in Aurora around 6-6:30 pm. The big stop is at the Holiday in Tofte, so bring money if you want to pick up food / beverages on the way up and back. The Cook County team also provides a wonderful spread of artesian breads, along with homemade soups and cookies.

Last but not least, Congratulations to freshman skier- Paul M. on his homecoming nomination. “Prince Paul” has been reigning over the snowball week at Mesabi East this week.

See you on the trails!

Last Race, Next Race and the week ahead....

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING for FRIDAY's COOK COUNTY RACE!

a note from the Cook County XC coach

Hello Coaches,
The Cook County Invite will have live video streaming as well as radio coverage of the classic portion of the pursuit. Its easy to do: just go to wtip.org and click on the live video link. Please pass this info along to your athletes' families and fans. Pincushion is in good shape, especially away from the stadium. We are altering the courses slightly to bring skiers back through the stadium on the lap and have a new finish that is slightly uphill instead of the too fast downhill finish. This will make for great spectator viewing. See you Friday.
Mark Summers

A TEST of our STRENGTHS were revealed at our first true Varsity pursuit race of the season this past Thursday at Mt. Itasca. The classic race certainly proved to be in our guys’ favor, and it was great to see them attack the course and this race with gusto! On the girls’ side, there is promise, but patience is a must. Final standings showed that we have determination. Now we need to roll it all together for the big package! The younger crowd of our team made their way to the podium with lots of top ten finishes also.  Keep it going skiers!  Captains awards to follow on Monday. Results are at www.boreal.org/~durfee  New pics added in the photo gallery too.

Our Friday night of “Tubing Technique” was a fun way to end our ski week.  It was great to race each other and form the “trains” at a non (ski) practice! Team unity / bonding is always something that I strive to work on within our (three) school ski team....  it was a laughable & silly evening!

  Laughing

THIS NEXT WEEK  will bring on our serious skiing side, as we prepare for our last regular ski meet of the season (Friday, Feb. 3) at Cook County and the following week’s big one- the section meet – (Feb. 9th) at Giant’s Ridge. Time trials for all of our V & JV skiers, along with the results from the upcoming Cook County meet, will play a role in determining the Section Teams.  Along with that,  our NEW UNIFORMS are in!!

Race help is needed at the Section meet, more info is provided from Deb Maki below.

Enjoy the recent snowfall – and get out on some newly opened trails this weekend!

Hello Parents & Skiers:

It’s that time of year again.   I’m starting to plan the Section 7 Meet and will need workers for the meet being held on Thursday, Feb. 9th.   With the nice snow that Giants Ridge received 4-5”, John Filander is planning on using the usual high school loops that we use every year.   So, we have enough snow to run a normal race.

Looking for workers to report to the Timing Bldg on Thursday, Feb 9th – 9:00 am.  This is a bib race – no chips, so bib jobs will be there, working crowd control out on the ski course, ski controllers – technic workers, a few timing jobs – inside and out, and asst. starters.    Please let me know if you are available.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
